孟子·滕文公上》:聖人有憂之,使為司徒,教以人倫:父子有親,君臣有義,夫婦有別,長幼有序,朋友有信。
This was a subject of anxious solicitude to the sage Shun, and he appointed Xie to be the Minister of Instruction, to teach the relations of humanity: how, between father and son, there should be affection; between sovereign and minister, righteousness; between husband and wife, attention to their separate functions; between old and young, a proper order; and between friends, fidelity.
禮記·曲禮上》:獻粟者執右,獻米者操量鼓。
He who is presenting grain unhulled should carry with him the left side of the account (of the quantity); if the hull be off, he should carry with him a measure-drum.
揚子法言》:曰:「言合稷、之謂忠,謀合臯陶之謂嘉。」
Yangzi said: Words that accord with those of Hou Ji and Zi Xie's are referred to as loya1. Plans that accord with those of Gao Yao are referred to as excellent.
道德經》:是以聖人執左,而不責於人。
Therefore (to guard against this), the sage keeps the left-hand portion of the record of the engagement, and does not insist on the (speedy) fulfilment of it by the other party.

In the highest antiquity, government was carried on successfully by the use of knotted cords (to preserve the memory of things). In subsequent ages the sages substituted for these written characters and bonds. By means of these (the doings of) all the officers could be regulated, and (the affairs of) all the people accurately examined. The idea of this was taken, probably, from Guai (the forty-third hexagram).
