字孟卿，曹州濟隂人，年二十四，汴京破北走，依冠氏趙天錫，與元好問、楊奐遊，日益知名。世祖受京兆分地，聞挺名，遣使徵召，入對稱旨，字而不名。憲宗征蜀，挺謂不宜輕動，世祖深然之。及憲宗崩，世祖北還，挺奏當特嚴符信，以防姦詐，後額哷布格使至軍中，執而斬之，其效立見。中統元年，改宣撫司為行中書省，俾挺僉行省事，進叅知政事。至元六年，同僉樞宻院事，陞副使。九年，封皇子安西王，以挺為王相，會同官趙炳死，朝廷執擅殺者，鞫問伏辜，語連挺及其子瓛、頌，繫久之，免死，籍其家。二十年，復樞宻副使，俄以疾辭，卒，年八十，有詩千餘首，尤善𨽻書。延祐間，贈魯國公，諡文定水仙花二首。
