今天下雖無事,河湟有黠虜之患,嶺徼有逋蠻之虞,主上焦心灼思,晏詢夜謀。宰相戰慄於巖廊,百執事奔走於朝右。然尚未復貞觀開元之大治。有致君於唐虞,躋民於仁壽者,其人則鮮,其求則勤。元之聘,屢降於山林。少微之星,但明於霄漢。此真足下之所高視也。嗚呼!斯時也,山林之間,宜倒衣以接禮,重趼以應命。赴明天子千年之運,成大丈夫萬世之業。勳銘於鐘鼎,德著於竹帛。可不盛哉?夫主上知足下之道久矣,加以郡守薦之,宰相譽之,雖錫命屢頒,而高風轉固,接物日簡,入山益深,且足下將為道隱乎?則道隱者世不可知其名,俗不能得其尚。足下之名尚矣,丹青於世矣,豈謂道隱哉?將為名隱乎?則史隱者以怪行動俗,以詼言矯物。足下之道,伸之而伊夔,屈之而夷齊,豈謂名隱哉?將為性隱乎?則性隱者飾身不由乎禮樂,行已不在乎是非。足下頃薦名於有司,客位於侯伯,豈所謂性隱乎?然三隱者,足下皆出其表,復何為而高臥哉?如終臥陵陽而不起,是廢乎古人之道者也。仲尼曰:「素隱行怪,後世有述焉,吾弗為之也。君子遵道而行,半途而廢,吾弗能已矣。君子依乎中庸,遁世不見知而不悔。」夫前二者,聖人之所不為。足下之學楊墨乎?申韓乎?何其悖於道也?如遁世不見知而不悔,則舜不為高蹈也,舜不為真隱也。足下其亦有意乎?如納僕之言,翻然而起,醒然而用,朝庭必處足下於大諫,次用足下於宰輔。其在大諫也,以直氣吹日月之翳,以正道立天地之根。先黜陟於朝廷,次按察於侯國。其在宰輔也,外以道寧四夷,內以法提百揆。俾天地反妖為瑞,使陰陽易愆為穰。然後以元菟樂浪為持節之州,崑崙崦作駐蹕之地,又不知房杜姚宋何人也。果行是道,罄南山之竹,不足以書足下之功。窮百谷之波,不足以注足下之善。以足下之風,可以知僕之志。以僕之道,可以發足下之文。故不遠千里,授書於御者,用以吐僕臆中之奇貯也。僕之取舍,自有方寸,異時無望於足下。發函之後,但起無疑。不宣。日休再拜。
