故秦、楚、燕、魏之謌也,異轉而皆樂,轉,音聲也。九夷八狄之天也,殊聲而皆悲,一也。東方之夷九種,北方之狄八類。夫謌者,樂之徵也;哭者,悲之效也。徵,應也。效,驗也。憤於中則應於外,憤,發也。故在所以感。感,發也。夫聖人之心,日夜不忘于欲利人,其澤之所及者,效亦大矣。效,功也。世俗廢衰,而非學者多:非者,不善之辭,故曰非也。人性各有所脩短,若魚之躍,若鵲之駮,此自然者,不可損益。推此揆之,故不欲學。吾以為不然。夫魚者躍,鵲者駮也,猶人馬之為馬,筋骨形體,所受於天,不可變。以此論之,則不類矣。言人自為人,馬自為馬,不相類也。夫馬之為草駒之時,跳躍揚蹏,翹尾而走,人不能制,馬五尺以下為駒,放在草中,故曰草駒。翹,舉也。制,禁也。齡咋足以噆肌碎骨,蹏蹏足以破盧陷匈。咋,齧也。噆,穿也。及至圉人擾之,良御教之,圉,養馬官。擾,順也。掩以衡扼,連以轡銜,則雖歷險壍,弗敢辭。故其形之為馬,馬不可化;其可駕御,教之所為也。馬,聾蟲也,蟲,喻無知也。而可以通氣志,猶待教而成,又況人乎。且夫身正性善,發憤而成帽憑而為義,帽憑,盈滿積思之貌。性命可說,不待學問而合於道者,堯、舜、文王;言有善性,命可教說者,聖人不學而知之者,堯、舜、文王。詩云,不識不知,順帝之則是也。沉●耽荒,不可教以道,不可喻以德,嚴父弗能正,賢師不能化,丹朱、商均也。丹朱,堯子。商均、舜子。弗能化,詩云,誨爾諄諄,聽我邈邈,是其類也。曼頰皓齒,形夸骨佳,不待脂粉芳澤而性可說者,西施、陽文也;曼頰,細理也。夸,弱。佳,好。性,猶姿也。西施、陽文,古之好女者也。●哆●,蘧蒢戚施,雖粉白黛黑弗能為美者,嫫母、仳惟也。,讀權衡之權,急氣言之。●,讀夔。哆,讀大口之哆。●,讀楚籧氏之籧。籧蒣,偃。戚施,僂。皆醜。嫫母、仳倠,古之醜女。嫫,讀如模範之模。仳,讀人得風病之靡。倠,讀近虺。仳倠,一說,讀曰莊維也。夫上不及堯、舜,下不及商均,美不及西施,惡不若嫫母,此教訓之所喻也,喻,導也。而芳澤之施。且子有弒父者,然而天下莫疏其子,何也?愛父者眾也。儒有邪辟者,而先王之道不廢,何也?其行之者多也。今以為學者之有過而非學者,則是以一飽之故,絕穀不食,以一蹪之難,輟足不行,惑也。蹪,躓,楚人謂躓也。言以飽而不食,蹪而不行,喻丹朱、商均不可教化而非學,故謂之惑也。今日良馬,不待冊錣而行,駑馬,雖兩錣之不能進;為此不用冊錣而御,則愚矣。為良馬能自走,不復用垂,得駑馬,無以行之,故曰愚也。夫怯夫操利劍,擊則不能斷,刺則不能入;及至勇武,攘捲一擣,則摺脇傷幹,武,士也,楚人謂士為武。摺,折也。為此棄干將、鏌邪而以手戰,則悖矣。所為言者,齊於眾而同於俗。今不稱九天之頂,則言黃泉之底,九天:八方,中央,故曰九。頂,極高。底,極卑也。是兩末之端議,何可以公論乎。公,平也。
