10  | 右正言、寶文閣待制、特贈右諫議大夫汝陰常公，以熙寧十年二月己酉卒，以五月壬申葬。臨川王某誌其墓曰：公學不期言也，正其行而已；行不期聞也，信其義而已。所不取也，可使貪者矜焉，而非雕斫以為廉；所不為也，可使弱者立焉，而非矯抗以為勇。官之而不事，召之而不赴，或曰：「必退者也，終此而已矣。」及為今天子所禮，則出而應焉。於是天子悅其至，虛己而問焉。使蒞諫職，以觀其迪己也；使董學政，以觀其造士也。公所言乎上者無傳，然皆知其忠而不阿；所施乎下者無助，然皆見其正而不苟。《詩》曰「胡不萬年」，惜乎既病而歸死也。自周道隱，觀學者所取舍，大抵時所好也。違俗而適己，獨行而特起，嗚呼，公賢遠矣。傳載公久，莫如以石。石可磨也，亦可泐也，謂公且朽，不可得也。 |
