英夷滋事之初,民閒謠言紛起,有「寅虎之年定干戈」語,果於壬寅夏杪撒兵。餘寓揚州時,和議尚未成,警報踵至,有術士昌言揚城只有虛驚,必無大變,然不免破財。餘親聆其說,惟微言甲辰年有厄,咎徵尤在北方。然甲辰年自京師洎各直省並無事端,惟春初東河大工垂成復決耳。又言丙午、丁未兩年,兵象尤著。眾以為時尚遠,姑妄聽之而已。按陽九百六元二之說,自漢以來即有之,而丙午、丁未為國家厄會,則其說實倡自宋人。宋淳祐中,柴望撰丙丁龜鑒十卷,見文獻通考;後有元人、明人各為續錄一卷,則不著姓名。按柴望,江山人,紹熙間,由太學上舍除中書,因淳佑六年丙午元旦日食上此書,歷摭秦莊襄王以後,至晉天福十二年,凡值丙午、丁未者,二十有一,皆有事變。後元人續記宋真宗景德三年至理宗淳佑七年,值丙午、丁未者五;又明人續記元成宗大德十年順帝至正二十七年,值丙午、丁未者二,亦各舉時事以實之。其元人續錄序引陰陽書曰:「丙丁屬火,遇午未而盛,故陰極必戰,亢而有悔也。」又曰:「丙祿在巳,午為刃煞,丁祿居午,未為刃煞。」則亦不過術數家言。餘生也晚,回數六十年前丙午、丁未間,餘方十二三歲,然時已梗阻,稷門值林爽文之變,留滯年餘,始得歸里,亦不可謂非一咎徵。然國家敬天勤民,無時可懈,豈待六十年一逢厄會,始議修省。且史傳所載,亂多治少,不必盡係丙丁。則其說盡可存而不論,特不可不使人知此說,而以人勝天之理,則存乎人而已。
