馮跋升洪光門以觀變，帳下督張泰、李桑言於跋曰：「此豎勢何所至，請為公斬之！」為，于僞翻。乃奮劍而下，桑斬班于西門，泰殺仁于庭中。衆推跋為主，跋以讓其弟范陽公素弗，素弗不可。跋乃卽天王位於昌黎，《載記》：馮跋，字文起，長樂信都人，其先畢萬之後也；萬之子孫有食采馮鄕者，因氏焉。大赦，詔曰：「陳氏代姜，不改齊國，周師尚父始封于齊，姜姓也。戰國時，齊太公田和，陳敬仲之後也，篡姜氏之後而取其國，仍號曰齊。宜卽國號曰燕。」改元太平，諡雲曰惠懿皇帝。跋尊母張氏為太后，立妻孫氏為王后，子永為太子，以范陽公素弗為車騎大將軍、錄尚書事，孫護為尚書令，張興為左僕射，汲郡公弘為右僕射，廣川公萬泥為幽、平二州牧，上谷公乳陳為幷、青二州牧。素弗少豪俠放蕩，少，詩照翻。俠，戶頰翻。蕩，徒浪翻。嘗請婚於尚書左丞韓業，業拒之。及為宰輔，待業尤厚；好申拔舊門，好，呼到翻。謙恭儉約，以身帥下，帥，讀曰率。百僚憚之，論者美其有宰相之度。溫公作《通鑑》，雖相小國者，苟有片善，必因舊史而表章之，以言為輔之難。
