晉光熙元年，淵進據河東，克平陽、蒲阪，遂都平陽。晉永嘉二年，淵稱帝，年號永鳳。後汾水中得玉璽，文曰：「有新保之」，蓋王莽之璽也。得者因增「淵海光」三字而獻之，淵以為己瑞，號年為河瑞。以聰為大司馬、大單于、錄尚書事，置單于臺於平陽西。淵死，子和僭立。聰即和第四弟也，殺和而自立。
